Shipping waste management

"D. LIVADAROS- ACHAEAN LUBRICANTS S.A." under the title PELCO in the framework of the integrated solutions it provides for the management of hazardous waste is actively present, having already signed the relevant contracts, in the field of hazardous waste from Shipping according to the "Plan for reception and management of waste and ship load residues from ships travelling in Greek ports".

The relevant project award contracts are related to the collection, transfer and final disposal of fluid fuel oil waste and lubricant oil waste of ships from the Greek ports.

The reception of Fuel Oil Waste as well as Lubricant Oil Waste is accomplished either directly from the ships hosted in the relevant ports or via temporary storage tanks, which are placed in the relevant ports with appropriately certified, company-owned ADR tankers.

The collection and transfer of waste is managed according to the provided EU and Greek legislation and is accompanied by the necessary documentation (Identification Document for the collection and Transfer of Hazardous Waste) as well as the final Disposal/Process Certifications.

The EWC codes of the European Waste Catalogue, produced during the ship's operation as provided for in Annex I of MARPOL 73/78 and managed by our company are:

  • EWC 13 04 bilge oils
  • EWC 13 05 06* oil from oil/water separators
  • EWC 13 05 07* oily water from oil/water separators
  • EWC 13 05 08* mixtures of wastes from grit chambers and oil/water separators
  • EWC 13 07 01* fuel oil and diesel
  • EWC 13 07 03* other fuels (including mixtures)
  • EWC 16 07 08* wastes containing oil
  • EWC 19 02 07* oil and concentrates from separation

During ship maintenance and repair, it is possible that other kinds of hazardous solid or liquid waste may be produced.

The most common EWC codes of the European Waste Catalogue are the following:

  • EWC 08 01 11* "Waste paint and varnish containing organic solvents or other dangerous substances"
  • EWC 15 01 10* "Packaging containing residues of or contaminated by dangerous substances"
  • EWC 15 02 02* : "Absorbents, filter materials (including oil filters not otherwise specified), wiping cloths, protective clothing contaminated by dangerous substances"
  • EWC 16 01 07* and description: "Oil filters"

Holding the necessary permits and contracts with organisations abroad for the final distribution of hazardous waste, PELCO receives the appropriately packaged UN packages of hazardous liquid or solid waste directly from the ships, hosted in the relevant Ports, with the aim of storing them at its licensed locations and following, transferring them abroad and dispensing them in specific organisations abroad.

In order to provide integrated services in the management of hazardous waste from shipping, PELCO has been registered in the REGISTRY FOR HAZARDOUS WASTE MANGEMENT BODIES of the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change under registration no.: 0039 and holds the following permits:

  • License of environmental terms for the operation of a factory for the production of lubricants -greases from regeneration- recovery(R9 recovery operation) of waste oils, fuel residues and relevant materials under ref. No. 188560-19/01/2012, as well as its amendments, under Prot. no. 183349-20/02/2014 (addition of new storing and transfer activity for packaged hazardous waste - operations D15, R13) and Prot. no. 163237-26/08/2014 (new code addition), from the Gen. Environment Division of the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change.
  • License for the collection and transfer of hazardous wastes at a nationwide level, under Prot. No. 18856036518/-14/12, as well as its amendment, under Prot. no.
  • License for the collection and transfer of waste oils at a nationwide level, under Prot. No. 26929/708-02/07/2014 from the Regional Planning Division of the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change.
